a tactile design — fiber chair family

Muuto’s Fiber design by Copenhagen duo Iskos-Berlin came from a desire to not just create another plastic chair but rather bring something new to the design that resonated with how we perceive the world today and at the same time had a unique expression. This is the story of Fiber.

“We wanted to do a plastic chair the Muuto way”, says Boris Berlin, seated in the armchair in the studio of him and his partner Aleksej Iskos on the Northern outskirts of Copenhagen. Knowing that regular plastic chairs often became easily scratched and lacked a warm, soft touch, Iskos-Berlin decided to add a new perspective to the traditional form.

Elaborating on the ideas that went into Fiber, Iskos says: “Rather than making a chair that had a loud and interrupting expression, we wanted to perfect the design in a subtle way, ticking off the boxes of shape, comfort, materials and aesthetic.”

Giving Fiber a unique expression, they created a design that used a wood plastic composite: “Fiber is made from a composite that uses wood fibers from PEFC-certified forest productions across Europe, mixed with a plastic,” continues Iskos.

As the wood fibers are visible in the shell, Fiber has a characteristic, textural expression with a matte, soft finish and an easy touch. Speaking on their own perception of the design, Berlin says: “I like that Fiber has a paradoxical identity with a strong expression through the simple and easy shape. It’s a very noble issue to face as a designer, creating objects that intuitively fit into any space without making a visual noise.”

The Fiber family is constantly growing and now includes armchairs, side chairs, bar stools and stools, available in a multitude of colors and upholsteries with various bases and features, making them fit for both private and professional spaces.
