The textiles we work with
The material you choose will change the look and feel of your piece—whether it's the playfulness of textured wool or the understated elegance of other carefully selected materials. Explore our wide range of high-quality textiles and find your favorite.
Practical considerations
When choosing upholstery for your furniture, there are a few practical points you may want to consider: durability, exposure to sunlight, and pilling. To the right, you can read about these measures and what they mean for your choice of material.
Durability
Each textile has a Martindale or a Wyzenbeek score, which indicates its durability based on the number of abrasions it can withstand before showing wear. The higher the score, the more durable the textile. For most home environments, a Martindale score of 30,000 or a Wyzenbeek score of 15,000 is considered sufficient.
Sunlight exposure
If your piece of furniture is exposed to direct sunlight, you may want to consider lightfastness when choosing an upholstery material. Measured on a scale from 1 to 8, lightfastness refers to the material’s ability to withstand visible discoloration due to exposure to direct sunlight. The higher the number, the longer it will take for the color of a textile to change.
Pilling
Pilling is the formation of lint balls on a material as it sheds fibers. Measured on a scale of 1-5, a higher number means less pilling. However, pilling will decrease over time, and vacuuming your furniture with a dusting brush can help prevent it.
You may wonder...
Is it possible to change the upholstery?
We do not recommend changing the upholstery of any upholstered Muuto products, but if needed, we recommend having it changed by a professional. Altering the upholstery yourself could compromise the quality and structure of the product. For the best results and to maintain the integrity of your piece, we suggest seeking professional assistance to ensure proper handling and a flawless finish.
How to care for textiles
In case of stains, we generally recommend removing non-greasy stains by carefully dabbing with a lint-free cloth or sponge wrung out in clean warm water. If necessary, clean by dabbing with soapy water made with a little dish soap. Finally, dab the surface with clean water. Due to excess dye in jeans, dark jeans may leave stains on textiles; washing and cleaning may not always lead to satisfying results. Please do not rub the material hard as this could result in loss of color or potentially damage the nap.
How to maintain upholstery apperance over time
A piece of furniture can appear different depending on the upholstery -leather, linen, wool – all come with their own set of characteristics. To maintain an even firmness, we recommend using each seat evenly. Otherwise, uneven wear and tear can occur. Before using the product for the first time, the back and seat cushion must be plumped up and straightened out. Do this regularly to achieve the best comfort and appearance.
textiles & foam
OEKO-TEX sets high safety standards for materials tested for harmful substances. That’s why we use OEKO-TEX foam for the majority of our upholstered furniture. What’s more, the majority of our textiles are sourced from the Danish textile manufacturer, Kvadrat which has received the EU Ecolabel. A certification synonymous with environmental excellence and promoting a circular economy, their criteria encompass the entire lifecycle of a product from raw material to disposal.
