    Photo Essay

    Light
    Materiality
    by Matthew
    Johnson

At Muuto, we strive to create new perspectives on Scandinavian design. Pushing this notion forward is our Photo Essays—perceiving Scandinavian design through the individual lens and scope of photographers from across the world. For the fourth edition, New York-based photographer Matthew Johnson shares his perspective on the materiality of oak as an element of design.

Speaking on his approach to the photo essay for Muuto, Johnson says: “I wanted to use light as a medium of creating shapes across shapes, pairing the unique forms that arose from the chairs of Visu, Workshop and Cover.” Photographing the designs in his hometown of Hudson north of New York, Johnson sought to create interaction between the constant of shadows and the form language of the designs.
